Range Safety Rules

These rules exist for the safety of all members and the general public.  Please abide by the rules and report any violations observed. Portage Plains Gun Club provides a safe environment for target practice and sport shooting.  

We appreciate your help in maintaining a safe facility for your enjoyment!

Board of Directors reserves the right to refuse or cancel membership at their sole discretion, due to violations of the range safety rules.

1. All shooters must sign in and read range rules.

2. The warning flag must be raised prior to shooting.

3. Range hours are 8:00 AM until dusk.

4. Range will be closed during competitive trap shooting events and for special events as posted.

5. When 2 or more shooters are present, one must act as a range officer.

6. Centre fire, rim fire and muzzle loader (rifles & hand guns) may be used. 

7. No shotguns are to be discharged at target butts.

8. No tracer or armour piercing ammunition is to be discharged.

9. No binary or exploding targets are to be detonated.

10. Paper targets only at the rifle & pistol range.  Targets are not to be placed on posts.

11. All used targets are to be disposed of in the garbage and empty cartridges (spent brass) are to be picked up.

12. All rifle shooters must be no further than 100 yards from the backstop.  The bench rest is measured to be 100 yards from the backstop.  

13. All handguns must be at a maximum distance of 25 yards from the backstop.  

14. Rifle and handgun shooting are not permitted at the same time.

15. All firing ceases and actions are open before anyone enters the firing line.

16. All shooters must sign out, lower warning flag and lock the gate when leaving.
